A JOURNEY TO A BOTTOM OF THE
DEAD
Haifa Al-Jabri — Saudi Poetess
Translated by Abdullah Ingad
—
I.
A journey to a bottom of the dead,
Where sundry worlds in restless quiet lie,
I laid the noise of those who long have fled,
And raised from that deep silence to the sky.
I hung suspended there, nor could I find
What might have made my hand’s own wound a voice;
O thou who on my lips art built and bind,
What harm if thou shouldst speak, though not by choice?
Grant me a ruin that is language whole,
Before whose face the fiercest brow did frown,
That I may say to fire: “Now be thou soul!
Behold, I am the living and the dead, and known!”
—
II.
Nothing of what became our burning flame
Had been, before, brought to its ash and dust;
O voice, take thou my altar by the right,
That my blood may return when thou art come,
And I, who cross our exile, make my trust
That our last word shall be a verse, and home.
